Women's Track And Field Has Strong Showing On Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --- Competing on the brand new hydraulic banked track at the Ocean Breeze Track and Field Complex on Staten Island, the Cornell women had a very strong meet on Friday night at the Fastrack Invitational. With a partial squad, the Big Red posted 15 ECAC qualifiers and four alterations to the school top 10 lists to go along with eleven top ten finishes in the meet.One of the best events for the Big Red on the night was the 3000 as three Cornell women had terrific races to take three of the top five collegiate places. Sophomore Jackie Katzman moved to No.5 all-time in school history in only her second ever attempt at the distance, running 9:26.07 for third (second collegiate). Senior co-captain Caroline Kellner made the race happen with a strong move to the lead in the middle laps and ran a seasonal best 9:28.89 for fourth (third collegiate). Another big seasonal best and ECAC qualifier came from junior Taylor Spillane, who ran 9:37.63 for seventh. The mile also saw three ECAC qualifiers as senior Claire DeVoe ran 4:49.16 for sixth, senior Sarah Holl had a big PR to place 13th in 4:54.61 and senior Kristen Niedrach ran 4:58.51 for 22nd despite losing her shoe in the first lap. Freshman Briar Brumley had a seasonal best of 5:00.59. Another impressive ECAC qualifier in the middle distances came from sophomore Shannon Hugard, who set an indoor personal best of 2:10.69 to place sixth overall in a strong field.Four Cornell sprinters were undefeated in their heats of the 200 and 400 on Friday. The sprint tandem of junior Adrian Jones and sophomore Ellen Shepard continued to make waves. Jones placed fifth in the 60 (7.65, an ECAC qualifier) and then won her heat of the 200 (24.53, an indoor PR and No. 5 all-time) while Shepard looked sharp in the 60 (7.76, 9th) and was terrific in winning her heat of the 200 (sixth overall, 24.53, No. 9 all-time at Cornell) as both were under the ECAC standard in the 200. Senior co-captain Udeme Akpaete also won her heat of the 400, leading wire to wire in a seasonal best of 54.97, good for fifth overall. Sophomore Taysia Radoslav impressed in winning her 400 section, crossing the line in an indoor PR of 55.41, good for No. 7 all-time at Cornell; both Akpaete and Radoslav were ECAC qualifiers.Cornell picked up a pair of ECAC qualifiers in the vertical jumps as well. Senior co-captain Alexis Bartholomew was third in the college pole vault at 11-9 3/4 while sophomore Kate Gulbrandsen was third in the college high jump at 5-7.Also competing for Cornell on the day was freshman Imani Davis (22nd, 59.40) in the 400, junior Libby Nolan (22nd, 2:14.84), sophomore Leah Triller (23rd, 2:15.10), and sophomore Chinonye Uche (30th, 2:18.60) in the 800, and freshman Kat Quigley (24th, 9.20) in the 60 hurdles.Complete results can be found here:http://www.gojaspers.com/fls/12500/stats/trackfield/2016/fastrack_national_invite_(results).pdf?DB_OEM_ID=12500With a relatively small group competing on Friday in Staten Island, a large group of Cornellians will compete in the Sunday Invitational in Barton Hall on Feb. 14. The Marc Deneault Memorial Invitational is set for Feb. 20 in Barton and the Indoor Heps are Feb. 27-28, also in Barton Hall.
